The Space Between Us

It’s one of those days today

When everything’s starting to come down crashing

Altogether

All at once.

It started with bits and pieces crumbling.

But now the building’s falling apart in chunks.

It’s one of those days today

Where you’ve crossed my mind

Maybe even more than once

But I haven’t reached out to you.

Coincidently though, you have.

We’ve got three countries,

Four hours,

And five thousand kilometers between us

And perhaps, I wish you were here.

You’re trying to make conversation

But I’ve almost forgotten how to converse with you

And our daily ramblings have become a memory

Remembered with fondness and ache.

I want to ask you about so many things;

Your mini vacation;

The celebrations;

Your mundane musings;

The weather,

And so much more

But all I manage

Are monotonous replies.

Our broken conversation today

Points at the elephant

We never addressed

Cause of absence.

You got busy and,

So did I –

Sometimes separately

Sometimes together.

Days went

And then months;

Our conversation was recorded

And we kept repeating it

To keep it going

Till we got too busy for even that.

We’ve got three countries,

Four hours,

And five thousand kilometers between us

And though perhaps I wish you were here,

I need more space between us.
