New Year’s

We celebrated with sweets

And clothes,

Both fresh out of the box

Mornings began

The previous night

With meal preps

And decors.

Dawn came along

With scent of molten jaggery

And colours beyond sunrise.

We made homes

In houses not ours

In the colony

Of people more warmly known as

Informal family.

We ate second breakfast,

And third lunch,

And endless dinners

Till the hearts

Of the cooks were full.

We exchanged greetings with

Gifts packed in sparkling wrappers

And patterned boxes of sweets

Oozing fried ghee

Onto the lining of butter paper.

We brought in new year’s

With everything new

With everyone old.
